Christian Dior and Chinese Artists
The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing is about to host an exhibition titled ‘Christian Dior and Chinese Artists‘ which will run from November 15 for two months. The exhibition involves more than 20 collections of especially commissioned pieces of artwork by contemporary prestigious Chinese artists such as Zhang Xiaogang and Wang Du.
The above photograph is by fashion photographer Quentin Shih. All the pieces of artwork were created with Christian Dior pieces as inspirations. The artists were given the choice of classic collections by the original man himself, or John Galliano’s later designs for the label or even jewellery and accessories by the notorious fashion house.
Various mediums of paintings, photography, videoworks and sculptures will be exhibited alongside of the Dior pieces which sparked the inspiration.
It’s really cute that everyone’s talking about this being a great exploration of what happens when ‘east meets west’ and both are inspiring each other. Yet what I can’t help thinking of is that the world has already seen what kind of fashion adventures we can have when the east meets west. Such as the Lolita, Gothic and Punk fashions which started from Japan.
