It’s a new trend that’s bound to take off. Lacey sexy arm-length opera gloves. The perfect veil for a pair of hands holding a crystal champagne glass. Or even a beer bottle, for that ‘sexy lady who’s not afraid of her masculine side’ vibe.

Since vintage style has been making such a resurgance, it is only natural that vintage accessories such as gloves would be making a comeback. It’s almost as if Feminism has come full circle. From taking off the gloves to now realising, ‘we are so strong that we can choose to wear the gloves again if we want to.’ So it’s about choices, not about oppression or blindly following what everyone else expects of you.

Aside from the fashion, style, and even historic significance of this particular style accessory, it is also extremely practical in this particularly chilly 2008/2009 winter. So if you want to stay warm – and be able to feel your fingers – in style, choose a lovely opera glove to go with that shimmering party dress.

CHANEL Cuts 200 Jobs – New Ad Campaign Shows Nothing in the House

Well if there’s anything we were supposed to have learned from history, it may be the fact that all good things come to an end… whilst other good things then begin, again.

Not sure what the long-term plan is, now, for Chanel, however the morbid reality is that they have had to cut 200 jobs from their workforce – a crisis compared second only to when Coco Chanel herself fired ALL her staff at the outbreak of war in 1939.

Yet the thought of that also gives me plenty of hope. Since after 1939, well, it took a while yet Chanel did get her groove back. As surely the now Lagerfeld-controlled House of Chanel is due to do as well.

And 200 job losses doesn’t mean a complete closing down. The new ad campaign sneak peaks have been released, starring a new fresh face, Heidi Mount, a 21 year old model from Salt Lake City.

Daisy Lowe for Marc Jacobs shot by Juergen Teller

A sneak peak of the new Marc Jacobs ad campaign has been released, and I must say, it’s really very boring. Juergen Teller, you do not impress me this time. What is this? She is barely recognisable as Daisy Lowe and she doesn’t look very fresh.

Some say it is a reflection of the current shopping climate – nobody wanting anything too flashy. Dare I disagree? Of course! We don’t want to be reminded that we have no money and that the best we can do is probably something that rather resembles a bedsheet.

Give us something optimistic, something to aspire to.

And I can’t help but also wonder, just how big was Juergen Teller’s paycheck for this particular display of minimalism?

It’s just not visually appealing. Her eyes look really scary and her skin looks really blotchy. And why so many words?! If you have to explain the photography, then your photography isn’t really visually communicating what it was intented to communicate, now, is it?

Ted Lapidus Dies at Age 79

The 1960s fashion couture revolutionary Ted Lapidus passed away from pulmonary problems in Cannes, on the French Riviera on Monday afternoon.

The Paris-born designer was the son of a tailor, and launched his own label in 1951, yet made his mark in the fashion world by 1963, entering into the prestigious Paris fashion club that ran La Chambre Syndical de la Haute Couture.

Current President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy issued a homage to the designer, saying Lapidus “democratized French elegance and classicism” and “made fashion accessible to men and women in the street.”

Lapidus was known for a minimalist style, as well as pioneering the unisex look. In men’s fashion, he epitomized the sandy colored safari suit, and in his later years the label focused more on accessorizing, with many perfumes and accessories.

The Ted Lapidus label is now owned by his son, Olivier Lapidus.

“Ted was the first designer of the nouvelle vague [new wave],” said Lapidus’s sister, Rose Torrente-Mett.

The funeral service is scheduled for Friday, where Ted Lapidus will be buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery; a cemetery where other greats such as Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Chopin are also buried.

“Through fashion, you can be a flirt,” says Dita Von Teese in the new issue of Citizen K where she is not only promoting her line of lingerie, yet also spills some beans on her road to success. Apparently she gathered much wisdom and advice from the people around her, and didn’t listen to a word of it. Such was her key to success.

“What I wanted was not to be like everyone else,” said Von Teese. So the typical road of actress or model never appealed to her. And now, how ironic is must seem that through stripping she is now in high demand as both an actress and a model.

Now with stripping and fashion modeling aside, Dita Von Teese is also becoming quite the businesswoman. She says of her lingerie line, “I’m a crazy girl with an obsession for lingerie. It is not a question of seduction, but of femininity.”

New Year Fashions: Affordable Pretty from Target’s New Thakoon Collection

Target’s new Thakoon Collection is now available for online purchase until the end of January 2009. The collection is breezy and sport, yet feminine and sophisticated. (Surprisingly impressed, to be honest). Target is definitely upping its fashionable reputation.

The Thakoon Collection is by new emerging designer Thakoon, as part of Target’s Go International campaign in support of up-and-coming designers (separate to its design collaborations with mega-star designers such as Alexander McQueen).

The collection has a lot of fun with mixing prints and Thakoon hopes that girls will have more confidence to have fun with fashion through his designs. It’s definitely very summery – almost a little odd given the freezing temperatures in the US these days. Yet it’s never too early to be prepared for the next season, so this Thakoon collection is not untimely at all.

Some of the dresses are so cute they could simply be paired off with a black tight basic top and black leggings in order to become winter wear.

Style Lesson from Zara Phillips: Magenta is the new Black

Zara Phillips appeared with the rest of her royal family for the Christmas Day church service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Norfolk on Christmas Day, sporting a bright magenta hat from award-winning designer Philip Treacy’s latest collection.

Though the attention was most definitely directed towards the upper-half of her body due to the bright hat; I really must commend her for the subtle accessorising of the magenta-toned clutch she is holding alongside of the gorgeous brown coat. With the little round collars and those lovely gold earrings, Zara’s adding plenty of warmth to this usually sombre-coloured winter season.

Other younger Princesses, Beatrice and Eugenie were wearing cute round berets with their coats and black leggings. Eugenie also went very bright in colour with her coat of light sky-blue. Beatrice opted for a black coat with subtle navy stripes near the cuffs, waist and collar.

Beatrice’s heels – awesome five-inchers as they were – proved to be a bit of an impractical option, as she stumbled a bit during the walk.
