Diane von Furstenburg sure seems to be getting her name on TV a lot lately, starring in one of the Project Runway challenges, and now reality TV show Hills star Whitney Port is starring in yet another reality TV show set at the fashion house in New York. Lots of great publicity, sure, but how are the latest runway collections actually matching up to the generated spotlights?

Titled ‘Rock Goddess,’ Diane von Furstenberg’s Spring 2009 collections shown at New York Fashion Week involved many vibrant prints of abstract arrangements and flowing fabrics, dresses, dresses, and more dresses. There was some swimwear and the occasional straight-legged trousers, but I couldn’t help this softly nagging feeling in my gut that… if this didn’t have the ‘von Furstenberg’ label on it, I probably wouldn’t care.

I’ve got friends who play around with clothes they bought from second-hand clothes shops which end up looking just like some of the pieces in this collection. With Diane it’s always about the patterns, and even her ‘plain’ ensembles of one-coloured pieces happen to be in extremely bright colours. I just don’t see anything new here, though. It’s like Diane repeating Diane, for the sake of reiterating that she is Diane. But without the history and (frankly, she’s so smart for generating this) the TV publicity, I wouldn’t have looked twice at these recent pieces. I’m not saying they’re bad. But I also don’t think they’re that great.
