Peplums in Paris (Part 1 of 4): Chanel

One significant new trend which has emerged from the runway shows of the Spring/Summer 2009 ready-to-wear Paris collections is the re-introduction of the classically feminine silhouette of peplums.

‘What is a peplum?’ some may ask.

It’s when there’s a little skirt that comes out from a fitted vest or tunic top piece that goes over the pants or other fitted skirt underneath. Emphasis here is obvious: the hips. Bringing back the booty.

Having once been all the rage with pencil skirts in the 1940s and 50s, peplums made a comeback this year, being shown at Chanel, BalenciagaDior and Louis Vuitton throughout September’s Paris Fashion Week.

At Chanel it was adapted into the forms of the tweed blazers and dress tops. Signature Chanel colours and fabrics included, it’s amazing how one little structural feature can suit and compliment each fashion house’s signature styles.

The entire Chanel collection for SS09 was ridiculously classy. With classic black and white styles and a feminine palette of pinks, peaches and purples matched with signature ‘masculine’ tweed fabrics and business blazers.
