Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear: John Galliano
It isn’t enough for John Galliano to produce an exquisite line of clothing, place the garments on models and then send them down the runaway. He presents his collections as if they are his visual master thesis on his chosen topic, making obvious points and subtle references. Galliano’s topic this season is the Napoleonic War.
The most literal, bold pieces took their inspiration from the military itself with plumes tucked into helmets and fuzzy hats like those worn by the guards at Buckingham Palace. The garments paired with these declarative items were surprisingly wearable with pleating, sheaths and military cuts appearing most often. This collection wasn’t devoid of the overtly feminine. Floral frocks with a funky, retro print on their often ultra sheer surface proved to be a romantic counterpoint to all of the masculine authority.
The dominate colors of Galliano’s collection were red and black with the floral prints encompassing the more pastel colors. The evening dresses in particular benefited from the crimson hue and Galliano wisely doesn’t ruin a good thing by overreaching, focusing instead on updated classic cuts and beautiful beading.

The crimson dresses are breathtaking. I especially love the ones with beading and the one with the rows of ruffles on the short skirt. Modernity based on classic style is how I’d describe the designer. Of course everything looks good on wraith like models. How well they flatter a woman WITH boobs is another story. The models are beautiful and the dresses likewise but please keep the hats.:)Lot of my friends think models would look even better if they each gained 5-7 pounds.

Hi Perowlifick2,
I’m surprised to agree with you about something. Love the dresses and hate the hats. But there’s no such thing as too thin.

I like the red and crimson dresses and skirts and wish I could afford a few. Maybe they’ll do some knock offs and I can buy one of those. Understand the military concept of the hats not that I want wear one. Stark contrast to pretty outfits.

These are interesting. No hard work understanding the appeal of these outfits. Very attractive.

I’m really glad I cannot afford the third red dress from the left. I would just hate having hoardes of guys worshipping at my feet whenever I wore it. Better I am isolated and concentrating on work. I wouldn’t have time for both. Seriously I wonder how much that dress costs. Like the menus in restaurants – if it ain’t listed – ya can’t afford it.
