Update on Michelle Obama’s Dress: Confirmed Narciso Rodriguez

6 November, 2008

It’s almost a little alarming how like a tidal wave the fashion journalists have jumped on board the critique (or admiration) of Michelle Obama’s dress. (Though FYI, we here at Edictive totally jumped on that bandwagon before the crowd latched on!)

Sources have confirmed that it was a Narciso Rodriguez dress, seen here at his New York Spring 2009 RTW show. The dress is a part of the criss-cross theme Rodriguez adopted for the upcoming season.

With all the criticism for Michelle’s choice running, I have to defend her and say that, of all the Rodiguez dresses from the Spring 2009 collection, she picked the most form-flattering. The cross minimizes the waist, the blacks on the side minimizes the hips. What’s not to like?

I agree with Julie Gilhart, fashion director from Barneys New York, who said to the New York Times, “That dress was unpretentious. It said, ‘Be who you are — don’t let someone else tell you how to be.’”
